For the next six weeks, our students are learning one of the oldest ways Christians have ever prayed… lectio divina, or sacred reading. Not reading a lot. Reading slowly, and letting a few words sink all the way in.

We made a book for it. Grace upon Grace walks through six simple steps each day: be still, read, reflect, respond, rest, and carry one thing into your day. Each week follows one movement of God’s grace… the grace that goes before us, the grace that saves us, and the grace that keeps making us whole.

Grace upon Grace is only the first three weeks. On December 1, 8 and 15 we keep going together with a new theme called Before the Dawn, six weeks in all.

We hope our students receive what God has been offering all along: a relationship with him in love, and with each other in love. None of this happens by trying harder. It happens by showing up, slowing down, and letting God do what God does in us.

The three sessions

  1. 1Prevenient graceNovember 8–14

Grace that goes before. God going first: telling Moses his name, walking in the garden calling “Where are you?”, drawing people with unfailing love, leaving ninety-nine sheep for one. Exodus 34, Genesis 3, Jeremiah 31, Luke 15 and 1 John 4. Together Tuesday, November 10. This week's practice: solitude... same place, same time.

  2. 2Saving graceNovember 15–21

Grace that brings us home. What happens when you say yes: forgiveness, a new start, being brought home. Ephesians 2, Luke 19, Romans 5, Titus 3 and Luke 7. Together Tuesday, November 17. This week's practice: fasting... no phone before lectio.

  3. 3Sanctifying graceNovember 22–28

Grace that makes us new. Watching for gratitude, generosity and joy, the signs that grace is taking root, in Thanksgiving week. 2 Corinthians 3, Habakkuk 3, Luke 17, Psalm 136 and Philippians 4. Together Tuesday, November 24. This week's practice: generosity... give something away you'd rather keep.

What the class includes

The six steps

Every day: be still, read, reflect, respond, rest, and carry it. Same place, same time, every day if you can. Phone on Do Not Disturb, used only as a timer. Your Bible, the book, a pen. The passage is read three times, slowly, out loud if you can: first to notice a word or phrase, then to connect it to your life, then to hear what God might be inviting you to. It isn't about getting through it. It's about letting it get through to you.

Together on Tuesdays

Tuesday's passage is prayed together. We settle in, phones away, with a minute of quiet. Three different people read the passage aloud, slowly, and after each reading everyone says only a word, then a sentence, then what God might be inviting them to. No fixing, no debating. Just listening. Then a short true story of someone who knew this week's grace, three questions to talk about, and one word from our week before we pray for the person beside us.

More meets early on Tuesday mornings during the school year, at 6:30, in seasons with a break between. Season 02 is six Tuesdays at The Compass: Grace upon Grace on November 10, 17 and 24, then Before the Dawn on December 1, 8 and 15, for Advent. Jason and Jill Evoy lead it, and another parent joins us in person. Parents and anyone else who would like to pray along are welcome to use the book at home. Questions? Talk with Jason or Jill, or use our contact form.
